How do you rank on Perplexity AI? Make sure PerplexityBot can crawl your site, open each service page with a plain answer to the question your buyers ask, and get your business described accurately on the other websites Perplexity reads. Perplexity shows its sources as numbered footnotes under each answer and doesn’t publish how it picks them, so treat any promise of a guaranteed citation as a guess.
Owners ask this in Perplexity’s own Reddit community (“How does SEO for PerplexityAI work?” on r/perplexity_ai), and most of the guides answering it lean on citation studies from tool vendors. This one sticks to what Perplexity, Google and OpenAI say in their own documentation, plus the checks we ran on our own site. It is part of the work we do on our AI SEO service.
How does Perplexity choose which websites to cite?
Perplexity searches the web when you ask, writes an answer and footnotes the pages it used, and it doesn’t say how it ranks those pages. Its FAQ says it searches the internet “in real time” and that “each answer includes numbered footnotes linking to the original sources”.
Two things are documented. Perplexity runs its own crawler, PerplexityBot, which its crawler page says is designed to surface and link websites in Perplexity’s search results. The same page recommends allowing PerplexityBot to make sure your site appears in those results. So the first requirement is access. Everything past that point (which page wins, how much other sites count) comes from outside testing, and the vendor studies you’ll see quoted describe particular sets of queries at one point in time. Perplexity hasn’t confirmed any of them.
Is ranking on Perplexity different from ranking on Google?
The groundwork is the same; what changes is which crawler has to get in and where you check the results. Google’s AI features guide says “the best practices for SEO remain relevant” for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and nothing in Perplexity’s documentation asks for anything different at page level.
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | ChatGPT search | Perplexity | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crawler that has to reach your pages | Googlebot; the page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet | OAI-SearchBot | PerplexityBot |
| What the company says | SEO best practices still apply, and no new AI text files or markup are needed | Sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI crawlers) | Allow PerplexityBot so your site appears in search results |
| Fetcher used when a person asks about a page | Not covered on the AI features page | ChatGPT-User; robots.txt rules may not apply | Perplexity-User; generally ignores robots.txt |
| Where you check results | Search Console Performance reports | Asking ChatGPT, plus visits from chatgpt.com in analytics | Asking Perplexity, plus visits from perplexity.ai in analytics |
If you’ve already worked on showing up in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews, most of that work carries over. The Perplexity-specific part is mainly its crawler and how you measure.
How do I check that Perplexity can reach my website?
Check your robots.txt file, then your firewall or CDN, then your server logs. Most owners can do the first two in one sitting.
- Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt. Look for a group that starts
User-agent: PerplexityBotfollowed byDisallow: /, or aUser-agent: *group withDisallow: /and no separate PerplexityBot group. Either one shuts Perplexity’s search crawler out. - Check your firewall, CDN or security plugin. Perplexity’s crawler page says that if you use a web application firewall you may need to explicitly allow its bots. It publishes current IP ranges at perplexitybot.json and perplexity-user.json, and recommends checking both the user agent and the IP address, so a fake bot using the name doesn’t get waved through.
- Search your server logs for “PerplexityBot”, or ask your host to. Visits from it mean the crawler is getting in. If a month goes by with none, go back over steps 1 and 2.
- Allow a day after any change. Perplexity says it may take up to 24 hours for its systems to reflect a new setting.
Here is the PerplexityBot group from our own robots.txt, checked this week. It lets the crawler read the whole site except the WordPress admin area:
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /
Disallow: /wp-admin/
Allow: /wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpPerplexity-User, the fetcher that opens a page when someone asks Perplexity about it, generally ignores robots.txt because a person requested the page. OpenAI says the same of ChatGPT-User. Blocking PerplexityBot works against being found in Perplexity search, yet it won’t stop every visit from Perplexity. Google’s robots.txt guide also points out that robots.txt “cannot enforce crawler behavior”. If you’re deciding which AI bots to let in at all, our guide on whether to block AI crawlers goes through each one.
What should my website say so Perplexity cites it?
Each service page should answer one buyer question in its first two sentences, with details only your business can give. A tool assembling an answer from several sources has more to work with when a page states who you help, what you do, where and how pricing works.
An example, for a made-up bookkeeping firm in Leeds:
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| “Welcome! We are passionate about helping businesses thrive with tailored financial solutions.” | “We do monthly bookkeeping and VAT returns for sole traders and limited companies in Leeds and Bradford. Fees are fixed each month and based on how many transactions you have; send last month’s bank statement and we’ll quote within one working day.” |
The second version answers the questions people type into an assistant: who it’s for, what’s included, where, and how the price is set. Do the same on each service page, then add the follow-up questions customers ask you on the phone as headings, each answered in its first sentence.
You don’t need special files for this. Perplexity’s crawler page talks about robots.txt and firewall access and doesn’t mention llms.txt or schema, and Google says you “don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup” for its AI features. Our post on whether you need llms.txt covers that in full.
Do other websites affect whether Perplexity recommends my business?
They can, especially for “who’s the best” questions. Perplexity’s FAQ says it gathers information from sources such as articles, websites and journals and combines it into one answer, so a question like “best bookkeeper for small businesses in Leeds” may be answered from directories, review sites and local lists before your own site comes into it.
- Ask Perplexity five or six of the questions your customers ask and write down which websites it cites.
- Check your business details on each cited directory or review site, and fix anything wrong or missing.
- For “10 best” list articles, contact the writer with something they can check, such as a case study or your reviews page, and ask to be considered at their next update.
- Ask happy customers to review you on the sites that keep appearing.
Some guides tell owners to post about their own business on Reddit to get into Perplexity answers. We don’t recommend it. Communities spot undisclosed promotion quickly, and a thread that turns against you is still a thread an assistant can cite. If you want to take part, answer questions in your field under your own name and say who you are.
How do I see if Perplexity is citing my business?
Ask it the same questions every month and record what comes back, then check Google Analytics for visits from Perplexity. We haven’t found a Perplexity report for site owners that lists your citations, so you keep your own record.
- Write ten questions a buyer would ask, such as “who does [your service] in [your city]?” and “is [your business name] any good?”.
- Run them in Perplexity. You may need a free account: when we asked a question while signed out, it told us to sign up and repeat the request.
- For each answer, note whether you’re named, whether one of your pages is a footnoted source, and which other sites are cited.
- Repeat on the same day each month. Answers change between runs, so look at the trend over several months before acting on one answer.
- In Google Analytics 4, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and change the table’s dimension to Session source / medium. Look for a source containing “perplexity”. Our guide to tracking AI traffic in Google Analytics shows how to group these visits with ChatGPT and Gemini.
A simple log is enough. The row below is an example of the format:
| Date | Question asked | Business named? | Your page cited? | Other sites cited |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | Who does monthly bookkeeping for sole traders in Leeds? | No | No | Two directories, one accountant’s list article |
Is Perplexity worth the effort for my business?
The basic setup is worth doing for nearly every business, because it’s the same work that helps you in Google and ChatGPT. Extra Perplexity-specific effort only makes sense when your own numbers show it sending visits or your buyers mention using it. Work down this list:
- PerplexityBot allowed in robots.txt and not blocked by your firewall. Do this whatever you decide below.
- Main service pages answer the buyer’s question in the first two sentences. This helps in every search tool.
- Any visits from Perplexity in GA4 over the last three months? If yes, start the monthly question check.
- Do your buyers compare several suppliers before getting in touch? Ask new enquiries how they found you, and add “an AI tool like ChatGPT or Perplexity” as an option on your form.
- Are competitors named in Perplexity answers when you aren’t? Look at which sites it cites for them and work on getting listed there.
If you’d rather hand it over, our AI SEO service covers crawler access, answer-first pages, mentions on other sites and monthly tracking across Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google’s AI features. The first two months are free with no setup, audit or management fees, and after that you only pay if you think it’s worth it. Nobody controls what an AI assistant says, so we report what changed each month and don’t promise citations.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
| Mistake | What happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Bot protection in a CDN or security plugin blocks AI crawlers | PerplexityBot can’t reach your pages even though robots.txt allows it | Check the firewall’s bot settings and allow Perplexity’s published IP ranges |
| Blocking PerplexityBot to stop AI training | Perplexity says PerplexityBot is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models, so you lose search visibility without changing training | Decide about training bots separately, bot by bot |
| Paying for a “guaranteed Perplexity ranking” | Nobody outside Perplexity controls which sources it cites | Ask any supplier how they’ll measure progress and what they’ll change each month |
| Judging from one answer | Answers vary between runs, so one good or bad result tells you little | Ask the same questions monthly and compare |
| Service pages that open with slogans | There’s no clear statement for an answer to use | Lead with who you help, what you do, where, and how pricing works |
FAQ
Does Perplexity use Google’s search results?
Perplexity doesn’t say so in the documentation we checked. It says it uses web crawlers to gather information and index it for its own search engine, so allowing PerplexityBot is the part you control.
Can I pay Perplexity to cite my business?
We couldn’t find a paid way to be cited in Perplexity’s answers in its own documentation. For retailers, Perplexity announced a free Merchant Program in November 2024 for large retailers to share product details, so check whether that fits before paying anyone who sells a shortcut.
Does blocking PerplexityBot stop AI training on my content?
Perplexity says PerplexityBot is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. Blocking it mainly affects whether your site can appear in Perplexity’s search results.
How long does it take to show up in Perplexity?
Perplexity says crawler setting changes can take up to 24 hours to reach its systems. Whether you’re then cited depends on how well your pages answer the question compared with the other sources it finds, so there’s no fixed timeline; check monthly.
