A family law firm running Google Ads usually gets the campaign structure right: tight ad groups, sensible keywords, decent ad copy, and then sends every click to a homepage built for browsing, not for someone who just searched “divorce lawyer Parramatta” at 11pm. The ad did its job. The landing page didn’t. Google treats the landing page as part of the ad itself: it’s one of the three inputs behind Quality Score, and a separate policy governs whether the destination is even allowed to keep running.12 Here’s what actually needs to be on that page, and how to verify each piece.
The Landing Page Checklist
Work through this in order. Each item maps to something Google names specifically, not general web design advice.
- Message match. The headline and first sentence on the page should use the same words as the ad and the keyword that triggered it. Google’s own definition of landing page experience is explicit that pages “with text that relates to a person’s search terms” score better. A generic “Welcome to [Firm Name]” page for a “property settlement lawyer” search doesn’t relate to anything.3
- One practice area per page. A page selling divorce, child custody, property settlement and de facto separation advice all at once is harder for a visitor to act on than four pages, each matched to one ad group and one intent.
- A working, fast, single destination. No pop-ups, no interstitial that has to be dismissed before the content loads, no page that disables the back button, and a page that loads quickly on mobile. All of these are named as reasons Google will disapprove a destination under its Destination requirements policy, separate from Quality Score entirely.2
- A phone number and a form, both trackable. Family law inquiries split between people who want to talk immediately and people who want to describe the situation in writing first. Cover both, and make sure both are wired into conversion tracking (below). An untracked contact method is a hole in the account’s data, not just a missed lead.
- Genuine credentials, not manufactured trust. Name the solicitors handling the matter, their actual practice areas and how long the firm has operated. Skip invented client counts or unverifiable “success rate” figures, and check your state law society’s advertising rules before publishing any client testimonials, since several restrict or prohibit them for legal services.
What Actually Gets a Landing Page Disapproved
Destination requirements sit outside Quality Score entirely. A violation can stop the ad from running, though Google issues a warning at least seven days before any account suspension.2 The policy specifically calls out:
| Problem | What it looks like on a law firm page |
|---|---|
| Difficult navigation | A booking widget or chat pop-up that blocks the page content, or a page that’s slow to load on a phone on a train |
| Direct-download or mailto links | An ad pointing straight at a PDF fee schedule or a “mailto:” link instead of a page |
| Abusive experiences | Auto-redirects with no click from the user, or a page that manipulates browser history so the back button doesn’t return the visitor to search results |
None of this is exotic. It’s mostly what happens when a page is built by whoever last touched the website template, without anyone checking it against the ad account.
Comparing Ways to Track a Call From the Page
A phone number on a landing page is only useful to the ad account if a call against it counts as a conversion. Google documents five distinct ways to do this, and they aren’t interchangeable:4
| Method | What it measures | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Calls from ads (call assets / call-only ads) | Calls placed by tapping the call button that appears with the ad itself | Simplest to set up; misses anyone who calls the number printed on the landing page instead of tapping the ad |
| Calls to a number on the website | Calls to a Google forwarding number shown on the page to anyone who arrived from an ad click | Needs the Google tag and a website call conversion snippet correctly installed. Worth checking in Tag Assistant if it shows “Inactive Tag” |
| Clicks on a mobile number | Taps on a phone number or button on the mobile site | Counts the click, not whether the call actually happened or how long it lasted |
| Clicks on call ads/assets (no forwarding number) | An estimate of whether a meaningful call occurred, without routing through Google’s number | Lower setup effort, less precise than a measured call duration |
| Imported call conversions | Calls tracked in the firm’s own phone or CRM system, imported back into Google Ads | Most control (can flag only calls that became a real retainer) but requires a separate call-tracking system to feed from |
The first four all rely on a Google forwarding number, which is available in Australia along with most other major markets. A forwarding number keeps working for the same caller for 60 days after their first call, and Google notes that the large majority of calls happen within about five minutes of someone seeing the number.5
Step by Step: Setting Up Call Tracking on the Landing Page
- In Google Ads, go to Assets within the Campaigns menu, select the + icon, and choose Call.6
- Choose whether the call asset applies at the account, campaign or ad group level, then enter the firm’s phone number. Vanity, premium and fax numbers aren’t accepted.6
- Turn on call reporting in account settings so Google can supply a forwarding number and report call duration and time. This is what makes call length usable as a conversion trigger.64
- If the website uses dynamic number insertion or a third-party call-tracking script, Google’s automated check can’t read the number from the page source. Verify domain ownership instead, either by linking Google Search Console to the Google Ads account or by placing the Google tag directly in the site’s raw HTML (not through a tag manager container), then resubmit the call asset for review.6
- Set a minimum call length that reflects a real inquiry for the firm. A 90-second cutoff filters out most wrong numbers and voicemail hang-ups without excluding a genuine first conversation.4
Step by Step: Setting Up the Form-Submission Conversion Action
- Go to Summary within the Goals menu and select + Create conversion action.7
- Enter the firm’s website domain and run the scan. If a Google tag or linked Analytics property is detected, the account already has the plumbing in place; if not, set one up before continuing.7
- Choose the conversion category that matches a form submission (typically “Submit lead form” or “Contact”), then pick Automatically without code if the confirmation happens on its own “thank you” page. Select the event type, the URL match type (is / contains / starts with), and the URL itself.7
- If the form submits without a page redirect (an on-page success message instead), use Manually using code, which generates an event snippet to place on the confirmation state.7
- Set the new action as a primary conversion if it represents a genuine inquiry the account should bid toward, not a secondary, observation-only signal. Getting this wrong is a documented reason Smart Bidding can optimise toward the wrong outcome.7
Worked Example: A Sydney Family Law Firm’s Property Settlement Page
Take a firm running Search ads against “property settlement lawyer Sydney” and related keywords, sending traffic to a single page built for that ad group:
- Above the fold: a headline using the exact phrase “Property Settlement Lawyer, Sydney,” a one-line description of who the page is for, a click-to-call button, and a short enquiry form, with no navigation menu competing for attention.
- Body: what the firm handles within property settlement specifically (asset pools, superannuation splitting, de facto claims), the solicitors who work on these matters and their experience, and a plain-language explanation of what a first consultation covers.
- Tracking wired in before the campaign launches: a call asset with call reporting on, a verified forwarding number, and a primary conversion action tied to the enquiry form’s confirmation state, set up using the two walkthroughs above, so day-one performance data is trustworthy rather than something to patch later.
- No pop-up on load, and a back button that works: simple to state, easy to break with a chat widget plugin that fires immediately on page load.
Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them
- Mistake: every ad points at the homepage. Fix: build one landing page per practice area or ad group, matched to the keyword language in that group.
- Mistake: a phone number is on the page but nothing tracks whether it’s called. Fix: add a call asset, turn on call reporting, and confirm the forwarding number is verified (walkthrough above).
- Mistake: the enquiry form conversion action was created but never checked. Fix: go to Summary within the Goals menu and check the Status column for that action. A status other than working usually means the tag isn’t firing correctly on the confirmation page.7
- Mistake: a booking widget or exit-intent pop-up loads before the page content. Fix: delay it until after a genuine user action, or remove it. This is a named Destination requirements violation, not a matter of preference.2
