Facebook ads not getting leads usually means one of four things has broken: the campaign is set to find clickers rather than enquirers, the ad attracts people who were never going to call, the page or form loses them, or the leads are arriving and nobody sees them in time. You can tell which one in about ten minutes by reading four numbers in Meta Ads Manager in order: impressions, link clicks, landing page views and results. Find the step where the number falls off a cliff and fix that step first.
If your ads show no impressions at all, that is a delivery problem with its own checks, covered in our guide to why Facebook ads stop delivering. This post is for the owner whose ads are live and spending, sometimes getting clicks, and the phone still isn’t ringing. If you’d rather someone else found the leak, that is the day job of our Meta Ads management team.
Why are my Facebook ads getting clicks but no leads?
Because a click only tells you someone was curious, and something between the click and the enquiry is putting them off or not being counted. Add these columns in Ads Manager (Columns, then Customise columns) and read them left to right for the last 14 to 30 days:
| What Ads Manager shows | Where it breaks | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions near zero, or Delivery isn’t Active | Delivery | Billing, review status and budget. See our delivery checklist. |
| Plenty of impressions, very few link clicks | The ad | The offer and the first line of copy. Check the ad’s quality ranking and engagement rate ranking. |
| Link clicks fine, landing page views far lower | Page loading | Open the page on your phone over mobile data. A big gap here usually means the page is slow or broken on mobile. |
| Landing page views fine, results at or near zero | The page, or the tracking | Do the website’s own form emails show enquiries that Ads Manager doesn’t? Then it’s tracking. If not, it’s the page. |
| Results counted, but no enquiries reached you | Lead delivery | Where instant form leads go: Leads Centre, a CRM, or nowhere. |
| Leads reach you but don’t answer or book | Lead quality and follow-up | Form type, phone verification, how fast you call back. |
Meta’s ad relevance diagnostics help with the middle rows. Each ad gets three rankings against ads competing for the same audience: quality ranking, engagement rate ranking and conversion rate ranking, the last one compared with ads that have the same optimisation goal. To add them, open the Ads tab, click Columns, then Customise columns, tick all three and click Apply. They only appear once an ad has 500 impressions. A below-average engagement rate ranking points at the ad. An average engagement ranking with a below-average conversion rate ranking points at what happens after the click.
Worked example: where a cleaning company’s clicks went (example figures)
These numbers are made up to show the method. Say a domestic cleaning business spent $600 over three weeks and Ads Manager shows 400 link clicks, 150 landing page views and 3 results.
- Link clicks to landing page views: 150 ÷ 400 = 37.5%. Most people who tapped the ad never saw the page load.
- Landing page views to results: 3 ÷ 150 = 2%. Of the people who did see the page, very few enquired.
The first gap is the bigger leak and the cheaper one to fix, so speed up the page or move to an instant form before rewriting the ad. Rewriting the ad here would buy more clicks that still never see the page.
Which campaign objective should I use to get leads?
Use the Leads objective. Meta lists six simplified campaign objectives, and Leads is the one built to collect enquiries through forms, messages or phone calls. Traffic is built to send people to a website and Engagement to get reactions and messages, so a Traffic campaign will happily find you cheap clicks from people who browse and leave. It is an easy mistake to miss, because the ads look busy.
Inside a Leads campaign, the ad set has a performance goal in the Conversion section. “Maximise number of leads” shows your ad to people most likely to share their contact details. “Maximise number of qualified leads” aims at people most likely to become customers after they enquire, but Meta says that from April 2026 it is no longer available for new campaigns without a Conversions API integration with your CRM, and existing campaigns are affected from August 2026. For most small service businesses without that setup, “Maximise number of leads” is the option you will actually have.

Why are my Facebook leads not showing?
Often the leads exist and are sitting in Meta, or the leads are coming in and Meta isn’t counting them. Which one depends on where your ad sends people.
With an instant form, the enquiry stays inside Meta until you collect it. Meta recommends a connected CRM or Leads Centre so you can follow up quickly, and warns that downloading leads by hand slows you down. Leads can only be downloaded for 90 days after someone submits the form, so the Results column can show more leads than you can still retrieve. If a CRM or Zapier connection has broken, check Leads Centre before you decide the ads stopped working.
With a website form, Meta only knows an enquiry happened if the Meta pixel records it as an event on your site. If the pixel is missing, or fires on the wrong page, Ads Manager shows zero results while your inbox shows enquiries. That also means Meta has nothing to learn from, so delivery drifts toward people who click rather than people who enquire. Compare a week of form emails with the Results column; if they don’t match, fix the tracking before you judge the ads.
Why did my Facebook ads suddenly stop getting leads?
Look at what changed just before the drop, because a sudden stop usually has a cause you can find in the account. Check these in order:
- Delivery and billing. A failed payment or a spending limit pauses everything at once. Our delivery guide walks through it.
- Recent edits. Meta says an ad set usually leaves the learning phase after about 50 results in the week after its last significant edit, and that editing during learning resets it. Add the Last significant edit column to the ad set view and see whether the drop lines up with a change.
- Tired ads. If the same ad has been shown to the same local audience for weeks, frequency climbs and response falls. Our post on spotting creative fatigue covers what to watch.
- A broken connection. The CRM link, the website form or the pixel stopped working, so leads still come in but go nowhere or aren’t counted.
- Your own season. Demand for gutter cleaning or air conditioning repairs moves with the weather. Compare with the same weeks last year before rebuilding anything.
Why are my Facebook leads not answering or converting?
Usually because the form made it too easy to submit without meaning it, or because the callback came too late. Instant forms default to the More volume form type, which is built for quick submission on a phone. The Higher intent type adds a line under the contact fields saying the business may follow up, plus a review screen before submitting. You choose it in the Form type section when you create the form. Meta notes higher intent forms only show in Facebook Feed and Instagram feed on mobile, not on desktop.
You can also switch on phone number verification, which makes people confirm their mobile number with a one-time code before the form submits. Meta sends the code by WhatsApp or SMS, whichever it expects to work in that market. Meta says this helps filter out fake leads and bots. The trade-off is that anyone who enters a landline can’t submit at all.
Meta also says that cutting the time it takes to follow up can improve lead quality. It suggests running lead ads during the hours you can call back, and asking in the form when people would like to be contacted. We cover form settings in more depth in Facebook lead ads vs a landing page.
A 10-minute check when Facebook ads aren’t getting leads
- Campaign objective is Leads, and the ad set’s performance goal is Maximise number of leads (or qualified leads if your CRM is connected through Conversions API).
- Columns show impressions, link clicks, landing page views, results and cost per result for the last 14 to 30 days.
- Find the biggest drop between those columns. That is the step to fix first.
- Ads tab: quality, engagement rate and conversion rate rankings added for any ad past 500 impressions.
- Website traffic: the page loads quickly on a phone, and the pixel records an event when the form is sent.
- Instant forms: leads reach a CRM or Leads Centre, someone is notified, and nobody is relying on downloading leads by hand close to the 90-day limit.
- Last significant edit: no changes in the past week unless something was broken.
- Follow-up: someone calls every lead within the hour during the times the ads run.
FAQ
How long should I wait before deciding Facebook ads don’t work for my business?
Long enough to see real results, which depends on budget more than days. Meta’s learning phase usually ends after about 50 results in a week, so work out 50 × your cost per lead. If leads cost $40 each (an example figure), that is $2,000 a week, more than many local businesses spend, so judge on two to four weeks of results and cost per lead rather than waiting for the learning label to clear.
Should I send Facebook ads to an instant form or my website?
Instant forms usually bring more leads with less effort per lead; a good landing page usually brings fewer, more considered ones. If your clicks die before the page loads, try a form. If form leads don’t answer, try the page or a higher intent form. Our comparison of lead ads and landing pages goes through the choice.
Do I need the Meta pixel to get leads from Facebook ads?
Not for instant forms, because the enquiry happens inside Facebook or Instagram and Meta counts it. You do need it, or the Conversions API, when ads send people to your website, otherwise Meta can’t see or count the enquiries your page receives.
Would Google Ads get me more leads than Facebook?
For urgent jobs where people search for help, such as a burst pipe or a locked-out customer, Google often produces enquiries faster because the person is already looking. Facebook works better for planned work where you need to put an offer in front of people before they search. Many trades run both; our Google Ads service covers the search side.
If you want a second pair of eyes on your account, our Meta Ads team runs Facebook and Instagram campaigns for trades, clinics and professional firms. The first two months of management are free. You fund your own ad budget, and after that you only stay if the calls and booked jobs justify it.
